Tubers: What to expect

Mount Mera Tubers

These tubers have been grown right here at Mount Mera for at least one full season. Plant health and quality is monitored closely throughout the season.

They are usually sent as single tubers, though occasionally you may receive a small clump. Every tuber wakes up at its own pace, we carefully check each one before shipping to ensure it has visible “eyes”. Please note that eyes can sometimes be small and tricky to spot at first.

For a tuber to be viable, it needs three key parts: a body, a neck, and a crown with eyes.

Appearance and size don’t determine how well a tuber will grow. At Mount Mera Botanical, we focus on viability rather than looks.

Potted Tubers

In some cases, you may receive a potted tuber instead of a bare one.

These have been grown from cuttings in the previous season, and we’ve found this to be the most successful method for overwintering.

Your tuber will arrive in a small pot, allow it to wake up and start growing in the pot before planting it out as you normally would. When you’re ready to plant, you may need to gently cut the pot away. Inside, you’ll find a small clump of tubers.

Clump size and number of eyes will vary, but even the smallest clump will grow and produce a beautiful plant.

Imported Tubers (IMP)

Imported tubers may look a little different from what you’re used to.

They’ve been through a long journey and various handling processes to reach New Zealand. Because of this, they often arrive as small clumps and it's normal to see broken necks, dangling tubers, or shrivelled appearance. We inspect all tubers and clumps and make sure each one sent has at least one viable tuber attached.

We intentionally do not trim or clean these clumps (such as removing broken tubers, or long roots), as this helps reduce the risk of spreading disease.

Labels are attached directly to the clumps, normally around already broken tubers.
